De-Ruining

Hay and clay, 40 x 40 x 122 cm per sculpture, eight units in total.
These works were specifically produced for the park within the Thiel Gallery in Stockholm. Curator Anna Kleberg urged me to respond to the park environment and the classical sculptures permanently installed there.
My response became a group of works titled De-Ruining. Formally they draw from details in the stenographies of Blade Runner and Game of Thrones. The project was an attempt to work with the idea of entropy within the fields of architecture and aesthetics. Robert Smithson’s idea’s of how entropy operates within all things man made, just as in nature, was propagating my work here — which I openly acknowledge in my title which draws from his “De-Architecturing”. My sculptures were produced in impermanent materials derived from directly nature, unfired clay and hay. The noticeable process of physical change consituted one of the indexes of entropy in the work.
I was interested in how the distinctive architectural language in the forms I utilized had floated through, and existed within, a large number of diverse contexts. "Originally’ the temples of the Maya culture, which centuries later inspired Frank Lloyd Wright to design a number of residences in Los Angeles. These buildings were subsequently repurposed as environments other than the real ones in a number of films and TV shoes. I looked at this drifting of form through contexts as analogue to the scientific appreciation of entropy that establish the everlasting but always relocating property of heat within thermodynamics.
